Reminder: Windows 7 Beta bi-hourly shutdowns begin

Microsoft is reminding customers that systems sporting the Beta release of its Windows 7 operating system - launched back in January '09 - will begin to automatically shut down every two hours.

The bi-hourly shutdown, acting as a warning prior to the August 1st expiration of the beta, is designed to encourage users to switch to an alternative legitimate operating system support.

Those wanting to continue to use Windows 7 prior to its official launch on October 22nd can do so by installing the Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC). Readers should be aware, however, that Microsoft does not encourage users to upgrade from the Beta to the RC. A clean install is the only officially supported upgrade path.

It's also worth noting that the Windows 7 RC will also eventually expire. RC users will face bi-hourly shutdowns beginning on March 1st 2010, and will be prompted to install a released version of Windows. Following that, the RC will expire on June 1st, 2010.

Want to know how you can get hold of Windows 7 once it becomes available? Check out our guide to Microsoft's Windows 7 pricing and promotions.

HOW TO FORWARD OUR EMAILS TO GMAIL ACCOUNT

When we have several emails (domains, personal and business) which we check on regular basis, it would be very convenient if we are able to centralize all our emails in just one place. I didn't really bother to pay attention on this feature until I find myself spending more time on login and logout, hopping from one email to another just for catching up all the updates. So here is the several steps taken to have all your mails in Gmail.

How to do it step-by-step?

1. First you need to set up your other email to forward to your Gmail account. Most web-based emails have this. If you are using a premium hosting for your domain you can set the mail forwarding from within your Plesk, cPanel, or any control panel used in your hosting.

2. Next you need to get inside your Gmail account, go to Settings (at the top right) and click "Account" tab. Under “Send mail as,” click “Add another email address.” Enter your name or description of the forwarded mails and key in your alternative email address. You may also specify your “reply to” address if you want recipients to reply to a different email by default.

3. After clicking the "Next step" button, proceed by verifying your action. Verification code will then be sent to the alternative address.

4. Check your alternative email and click on the verification link and your new forwarding mail address should be activated.

That's it. You may want to check whether this works the way it should be by sending your email to the alternative address.

Windows 7 vs Windows Vista vs Windows XP : Gaming

A fundamental requirement for any gaming PC is that it should be able to run all of your favorite games. Even though it was replaced some time ago, Windows XP remains the best choice for compatibility. Just about every major new release is written to run on XP, and there's a good chance that it will run older DOS games, too.

It's a similar story when it comes to joysticks, game pads and other accessories. Most new hardware comes with drivers supporting XP as well as Vista. XP users also have access to a wide range of older kit that may never see drivers released for newer OSes.

This doesn't mean that Windows Vista users are deprived, of course. You can still run a plethora of old games – we've even found one or two ancient examples where Vista proved more compatible than XP – and there's no shortage of compatible gaming accessories.

What's more, Vista and Windows 7 add support for DirectX 10 gaming – a graphics and sound standard that can deliver new effects, better image quality and should improve performance in compatible games (assuming you've got a DirectX 10 graphics card).

3D POWER: Windows 7's gaming performance is already impressive, and it's only going to get better

We say 'should' because Vista has performance issues and doesn't make the best of RAM – a real problem when you're playing more demanding games. Does Windows 7 improve the situation? Our first tests didn't give clear answers: Windows 7 managed the best frame rates when we ran Unreal Tournament 3, but XP won out in our Company of Heroes tests (a shame-faced Vista came last each time).

What we can say is that Windows 7 performed really well for a pre-release version and should be faster still by the time it's released. The Windows XP advantage also tends to fall away as you use faster hardware. So, if you have a decent mid-range PC, Windows 7 would marginally be our preference for gaming, although XP still performs remarkably well.

Keyboard Speed

Did you know that you can customize some of your keyboard settings?

In Windows XP, go to Start >> Control Panel >> Printers and Other Hardware, then Keyboard.

If you're using Vista, go to Start, >> Control Panel and look for the Keyboard icon and double-click it.

This will put you in the Keyboard Properties screen. Under the Character Repeat section, you can choose how long, or short, you would like before a character (a letter, etc.) repeats itself when you're holding down a key. Maybe sometimes you're typing along and a double letter somehow shows up. It may have done this because you held onto that one key just a little too long. Well, if that seems to happen to you a lot, you can change the repeat delay to a longer amount of time, so you will have more time to move onto the next letter or word. Just use the arrow slider to move in either direction.

Next, you can check on the repeat rate of your keyboard. If you sometimes hold down a key for soooooooooooooooooooo long, it may take forever for that one letter to repeat itself. You can fix that by moving the arrow slider to the Fast side. Or, if you like it slower, you can move the slide to the Slow side. Once you have it where you would like it, you can test the rate to see how fast, or slow, it will go.

The last thing you can do is play with the cursor blink rate. Depending on how fast you would like your cursor to blink at you when it's standing still, you can have it blink at a fast rate, a medium rate or even no rate at all.

When you've made all your changes, just hit OK and they will take effect.

Social Networking Web Sites

We've covered the Internet, social networking Web sites and even some Web sites for children, but what about regular ol' chat rooms? Everyday, more and more people are using chat sites and to be honest, chat rooms can make you just as vulnerable as anything else in today's Internet world. So, what can you do to keep yourself safe? Well, give these tips a try!

1.) As much as we may not want it to be true, there are many people online who are very dangerous. If you don't keep your eyes and ears open, you may put yourself at risk. When you're talking to someone in a chat room that you've never talked to before, don't ever, for one second, think you know them. Plain and simple, they are a stranger to you and you should never give them your real name, address, phone number or any other personal information. That goes for your e-mail address as well, especially if it contains part of your name, etc.

2.) Another rule of thumb to follow is to never tell anyone you're chatting with what your daily routine is. If you do the same thing everyday, such as go to work or to school, don't give that information out. Or, if you visit the same places regularly (parks, stores, etc.), don't tell anyone! You don't want to give anyone any leads in knowing where you're going to be during certain times of the day.

3.) It's strongly advised as well that you do not meet anyone in person that you have met off the Internet. We all know it happens on a daily basis, but in this case, we're just talking about you. Don't worry about what other people have done in the past, just worry about yourself and stray away from meeting people in real life that you don't know. If you mix your real life with your computer life, you could be in for a big letdown or an unwelcome surprise.

Now, I know that some of you may not listen to all of that, so just in case you're stubborn, here are some guidelines to follow if you do actually meet someone. Always do it in a public place where other people are around. Tell one of your friends or family members where you're going, what time, etc. If someone else knows, they will be able to look out for you. And better yet, invite someone else to go along with you. Two is better than one!

4.) If you receive Web site links during your chat sessions, it's best not to open them. They could contain viruses or even be of a disturbing matter. Just leave them alone and all will be good.

5.) Try to visit chat rooms you know have moderators. That way, no one will be able to get away with threats, harassment or illegal behavior. I'm not sure about you, but it makes me feel better knowing someone else is there to watch my back if I happen to need them.

6.) It's best not to post any pictures of yourself either. Sometimes the people you chat with may ask you for your picture, but if you give it to them, it's just going to open another can of worms. It will give that person a chance to know more about you. They'll also know what you look like and that's just not good.

7.) I know it's fun and exciting to talk to new people every once in awhile, but it's really best to keep your chat room conversations limited to people you really do know. You know, your family members, your friends, your co-workers, etc. Those are people you know and can trust, so why not just talk to them instead? And besides, we all talk to our friends and family less than we should in the first place, so just set up a chat session with them and stay in touch!

Single Update for MS Word

When you use MS Word do you find yourself updating the exact same information in many different files?
For example, maybe you have a weekly sales figure that is put into several different Word files each week.
Do you open all the files and change the information in each and every one? Even with a copy and paste process it still can take quite a bit of time.
Or, is there a simpler way? Maybe a way to update the information once and all the documents make the change?
Of course - why else would I ask??
Here's the plan…
Create and save a file with only the information that is frequently updated.
Now copy that information.
Next we're off to the file where the information actually belongs.
Once there place the cursor where you want the information to be inserted.
Now it's time for Paste Special to do its job.
In older versions of Word it's located on the Edit menu.
Word 2007 has Paste Special in the bottom half of the Paste button located on the Home tab of the Ribbon.
When you're in the Paste Special dialog box you need to select Paste link.

Now click OK, and then Save the file.
Repeat the Paste Special process into all the files that should contain the data.
The next time you need the information updated in all the documents simply open the file with only the information in it - change the information - then save it.

Now open the other files.
You should find that the update has been completed in all of them.
There is one important piece of information that should be noted here… the link is specific to the location of the information file where it was first saved. If you move it then you're going to have to set new links - so it's best to be sure that you create that first file in a location where it can stay.

7 free Windows 7 tweaking utilities

Photo:- 1

If you're running the Windows 7 RC, chances are good that you're the kind of user that likes to monkey around with settings and tweak your OS. While you can go the DIY route and hack your registry and run your mouse ragged clicking through various control panel screens, there are a number of good, free apps available designed to simplify tweaking.

Pro tip: if you run one of these apps, use their built-in checkpoint creator before committing changes or create a system restore point yourself - just in case something goes awry.

Here are five - go ahead and add your picks in the comments if you don't see your favorite listed!

EnhanceMySe7en (pictured above) - One strike against EM7 is that you must install it. On the plus side, it's 32 and 64-bit (native). On the minus side, it uses 65Mb memory when running. On the plus side, it comes with a free frogurt!

Joking aside, EM7 is absolutely packed with options. Apart from tweaks covering every nook and cranny in Windows 7, the program also includes CCleaner-like registry and disk cleaning tools, a shortcut creator, fast access to many built-in Windows utilities, and much, much more. It's a beast.

Photo:- 2

Little Tweaker - Lightweight, portable, and focused on common adjustments, Little Tweaker is a good option for those of you who want an uncomplicated way to manipulate the context menu, disk space warnings, and the like. it failed to run on x64, telling me that I needed to have Windows 7 Ultimate installed (which I do).

Photo:- 3

Ultimate Windows Tweaker [post] - It's impressive what the crew at WinVistaClub is able to cram into less than 200Kb. Ultimate was built for Vista, but it works just fine with Windows 7 as well. Loads of options cover everything from accounts and UAC to the taskbar and start menu and beyond. UWT is totally portable.

Photo:- 4

XDN Tweaker [post] - This one falls somewhere in between Little Tweaker and Ultimate. It's a good choice for the average user - not quite the overwhelming number of choices of EM7 or Ultimate, but more than just basic interface tweaks. XDn is available as both a portable and installable app.

Photo:- 5

Windows 7 Manager - As the name implies, this one boasts non-tweaking features as well. System cleanup, privacy tools, process monitoring, an uninstaller, a duplicate file finder, and a handy repair center are all included. On the tweaking side, everything from UI customization to network and IE settings is easy to monkey with. This one's available in 32 and 64-bit flavors as an installer only.

Photo:- 6

TweakNow Power Pack 2009 - Like EM7, TweakNow is much more than a tweaking tool. It also sports registry cleaning and tuning tools, a disk usage analyzer, history cleaner, startup manager, and more. The interface is well-organized, and if you can't find a setting you want to tweak with PowerPack it might not exist.

TweakNow is install-only, but it's worth doing for the additional built-in utilities (if you need them, of course). One big gripe: once I heard my fan spin up to tornado speed, I called up task manager. 48% CPU use.

6 free Windows programs to fix and prevent PC problems by yourself

I am here with some of the Six simple applications that will help you - and they're all free for personal use! Now all you / we can try them.

1. PC Decrapifier - A lot of people that drop their systems off for repair say "take out any programs that don't need to be there." Well, that's exactly the kind of crud Decrapifier is designed to get rid of. It compares the programs on your system to a list of known bloatware (Wikipedia definition) and simplifies the removal process.

2. Malware Bytes - Those annoying popups you're getting? The weird pages you see when you try to search for something in your browser? Malware Bytes does a great job at removing the pests that cause those problems. It's usually the first program I run on horribly bogged-down computers. After a scan, clean, and reboot, they're usually much more cooperative.

3. Glary Utilities - The one-click maintenance mode in Glary is a wonderfully simple way for even non-technical users to keep their systems tuned. It tackles all kinds of tasks, from removing temporary file garbage and broken shortcuts to tuning up your registry.

One note: download the slim version to avoid the Ask Toolbar. You can opt out of it during the regular install, but slim removes it altogether.

4. Macrium Reflect or XXClone - No one wants to lose data when they drop off a system for repair. An easy way to make sure that doesn't happen? Fire up one of these programs and copy your entire drive to another hard drive (say, an external USB one).

5. A good antivirus program - Don't keep ignoring that alert from Norton that your subscription has expired. Surfing without up-to-date protection is a bad idea, especially when you can protect yourself for free. The link will take you to a previous rundown I put together of 10 programs that provide antivirus protection for your Windows system. None of them cost a dime.

Of the ten on the list, I recommend AVG, Avast, Comodo, and Rising Antivirus. If you're ok with beta (testing) software, Microsoft Security Essentials is worth a look, too.

6. Web of Trust - Savvy users might know what to watch out for online, but not everyone does. WOT (available as a plugin for Firefox and Internet Explorer) gives casual users a leg up by providing safety ratings for the websites you're browsing and links on search engines. Bad sites are flagged with a red circle, and you'll receive a full page, in-your-face warning should you accidentally wander somewhere you shouldn't.

Got another great, free application you recommend to friends and family? Share it in the comments, and let's empower some users!

Windows XP freeze or Stuck

In this email we would like to discuss reasons and solutions to a
very common Windows XP problem. It is one of the most hated problems
among PC users, we all hate it when our Windows Freeze or Stuck!

You mat experience a Windows XP freeze up or you are getting the
blue screen error, mouse freezes, or maybe your control panel is
freezing up on you. All these problems can occur for various
reasons, hence has various solutions.

But, before we continue we would like to emphasize that the solutions
described in this email are prior to our ultimate solution we offer
at: www.revivepc.net, while in this article we will describe various
ways to deal with a stuck WinXP, some will be quite simple other
methods will require a basic technical knowledge, in revivepc.net
we offer a 100% automated solution, which is simple to use and
amazingly effective.

Ok, so here we go, what can cause WinXP to freeze/stuck and how you
can handle it:

1.First of all, if your problem just happened in the last few days.
You will want to use your computers restore function, and go back a
few days. Pick a date when you know, your computer was operating with
no problems. You'll find the restore function in your control panel.

2. It is hard to say, what is causing your freeze up, but a number
of problems are caused by outdated video and sound drivers. If you
have the ability. You can update your drivers by going to the
manufactures website in downloading the latest ones.

3. The biggest reason XP will lock up, or any other operating system
for that matter is because of registry errors. When your computer
starts, or runs any application. It has to refer to the registry
for data. If you have corrupt or orphaned files in your registry this
may be causing your freeze up. You can find more information about
registry cleaners by googling it, or here:

http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=PBDdR&m=1ksyPLa8hAyus8&b=9SneHeXLycUgPdsPnivl_A (You will find here also a link to a
good registry cleaner)

4. One of the most common cause of a screen freeze is because your
computer is functioning on all of its RAM (Random Access Memory - that
is the working memory of your PC). thus it no longer has any
memory to function on anymore, thus it freezes up. The most common
and least dangerous cause of your PC screen freezing is possibly just
because your computer has no more RAM on which to function upon.
Most common cause of low RAM is too many programs running at the
same time "eating" your RAM. If all those programs are "legit" you
need to buy more RAM. If these program are Viruses/Spyware/Adware
etc, you need to clean them.

Printing "This Way and That" in MS Word

Here's a situation that's a bit perplexing for some…

Let's suppose that you have a Word document and you need some pages printed in portrait and some printed in landscape orientation.

I know many people who when put in a situation like this would scratch their heads, do a bit of surfing through Word's menus (or the Ribbon) and then pick up the phone and call, well… me.

So here's the advice I'd give them:

First thing that needs to be done is to decide where the breaks in the printing orientation should occur.

Both before and after the information to be landscape printed we need to insert section breaks.

  • In older versions of Word you'll need to use the Insert menu, Breaks choice. Choose the Next Page type of break and click OK.
  • In Word 2007 you'll find what you need on the Page Layout tab of the Ribbon. We need the Breaks button and then in the Section Breaks section, choose Next Page.

Again, be sure to insert this type of section break at any point where the page orientation will change - including when you change it back to portrait.

Now it's time to actually make the orientation change:

To do this you need to place your cursor on the page to be switched to landscape.

  • People using older versions of Word should then go to the File menu, Page Setup choice.

In the Page Setup dialog box, on the Margins tab, you need to select Landscape, make sure that at the bottom it's set for "This Section" and click OK.

  • For those of you with Word 2007 you're back to the Page Layout tab of the Ribbon. This time click the Orientation button and choose Landscape.

I found that Word 2007 didn't need to be told to apply it to a section - it just knew what to do.

Cable Speed - How Fast Is Cable Modem Internet?

The Question arises here tha how fast is  cable Model Internet is.

Cable modem has long been recognized for its superior speed compared to other forms of Internet service. Is cable modem speed really that much better than alternatives? If so, how much faster?

Answer: Cable modem speeds vary widely. While cable modem technology can theoretically support up to about 30 Mbps, most providers offer service with between 1 Mbps and 6 Mbps bandwidth for downloads, and bandwidth between 128 Kbps and 768 Kbps for uploads.

Cable Speed Considerations

Did you know your cable speed will vary depending on the usage pattern of your neighbors? Cable modem services share bandwidth among subscribers in a locality. The same cable line connects to many households. If many of your neighbors access the Internet simultaneously, it is a distinct possibility that cable speeds for you (and them) will decrease significantly during those times.

The causes of cable modem speed problems are similar to those of DSL or other high-speed Internet services:

  • Service glitches. Cable speed can suddendly drop if the service provider has technical difficulty with their network. Speeds should return to normal after a few minutes or hours.
  • Spy ware on computer(s). Even when your network may be functioning at full speed, spy ware programs may be consuming the modem bandwidth, lowering your cable speed.
  • Mis-configured wired or wireless router. Routers sit between your computers and the Internet connection. If not functioning properly, a router can greatly limit the cable speed achievable on all computers.
  • Slow wireless network connection. In some cases, a very slow Wi-Fi connection between a computer and a wireless home network will not keep pace with the speed of the cable Internet connection.
  • Old computer(s). Very old computers lacking sufficient processing power or memory cannot keep pace with a high-speed Internet connection.

As with DSL services, some cable modem services are symmetric (providing equal bandwidth for both uploading and downloading), but most offer much higher download bandwidth to match the typical needs of residential customers. Check with your service provider to determine the typical bandwidth levels associated with your subscription.
